Walking a new puppy is more about teaching than walking. The first 30 days build habits that last for years.
Days 1–7: Just the leash
Don't go anywhere. Put the harness on, clip the leash, walk around your apartment for 5 minutes a day. Reward calm acceptance.
Days 8–14: The front yard
5 minutes outside, no further than your front yard. Sit when they sit. Watch them get used to outdoor sounds.
Days 15–21: Around the block
One full block, max 10 minutes. Bring water and treats. Stop frequently.
Days 22–30: Real walks
Up to 20 minutes. Two walks a day. Always carry water — puppies can't regulate body temperature well yet.
By day 30 you will have a dog that walks calmly on a leash, knows the routine, and doesn't pull. Worth the patience.
Be ready for your first real walk.
